Puako, HI at Sunset
By admin On April 1st, 2009
I had been to Puako several times before this trip. A friend of mine owned a house there and he was happy to rent it to me for a steal of a price. So many things about Hawaii fascinate me. The warmth, the bounty of beautiful vegetation and flowers, the intense clouds that move so quickly across the landscapes. And, of course, the ocean. Being a surfer since the tender age of 7, I have a deep love for being out in the waves. Being from California, however, I was used to wearing a wetsuit. Oh, how quickly I became used to swimming in the warm, soft, turquoise waves of Hawaii!
On this particular trip, I was on my honeymoon. My wife was always my biggest supporter when it came to my photography. On this trip, however, she was understandably not quite as excited to let me spend to much time behind the lens. We wandered down to the beach one evening to take our ritual sunset swim and I grabbed my camera at the last minute. As my wife swam with the turtles (her newfound favorite thing to do), I swam back to shore and popped off a few shots. I honestly did not think they would be anything that I wanted to sell- I just took them for my love of the place and this tiny desolate beautiful beach in Puako, aptly called “Secrets,” that I had found so many years previous.
Once in a while someone will come across this print in my booth and recognize it as a beach on the “Big Island.” And when they do, if they feel the same way I do about Hawaii, they buy it without a second thought.
