Secret View

I had taken many a trip up Highway 1 in California but I had yet to bring home the the shot I wanted.   You know the one- with the craggy, jagged rocks edging over the pounding, wild, white-capped ocean with the light ever-so-perfect and the mist reminding you of a pristine and mystical time from long ago.  Yeah, that shot.  It’s the view that you see as you drive up towards Big Sur, put in your favorite CD (if your car is so old it lacks an IPOD input) and you say to yourself…”I should really make this trip more often.”  Anyway, as for me, I had made the trip quite often and yet I still had not gotten the shot I wanted. After about 4 journeys to the area and only mediocre shots to show for it, I simply felt as if I would never get the “great one”.

On this particular trip, however, I finally had an ace in my pocket.  A friend of a friend of a friend had a ranch in these parts and it was said to have a magnificent view and that it would undoubtedly offer me the opportunity for a great photo.  It took me weeks to finally get the phone number I needed and weeks more to talk to the person I needed to in order to get onto the property.  So, finally, I was on the road again headed for what was supposedly to be my Promised Land.  The only catch was, I needed to call when I got to the gates of the Ranch.  If the owner was there, he was there and would let me in.  If he wasn’t, I would have to try another time.  Problem for me is that I’m a married man with kids.  I just don’t got all week to sit around and wait for someone to let me on their property.  I hoped it would go smoothly and he would be there when I arrived.

Well, he was.  And what you see here is the result.  I could tell you exactly where the ranch is.  Because the truth is, I now believe there is a way to access it without going thru the main entrance.  But, goodness me, why the heck would I tell you that.  ; )
