Calla Lily

By admin On April 18th, 2010

There is something about the Calla Lily that is so regal.  It is strong and yet again fragile.  Also, something so undeniably feminine, that I can’t help but think of Georgia O’Keefe’s paintings.  It is then I understand why she must have been drawn to flowers.  Strength, beauty, life, love.

This particular Calla Lily was growing in my home garden.  It bloomed early in the Spring when it no other flowers were beginning to unveil quite yet.  I had no idea how I wanted to capture it (and less hope that I could do the beautiful thing any justice).  What I ended up doing was treating the flower like a model.  I shot it with my Nikon D200 and used a gold reflector to warm up the image.  Then, I decided to do something I don’t often do; I imported the image into Photoshop, took out the original background and created a different one in it’s place.  I love the way the earth tones of the altered background make the green tones coming up from the stem burst and enhance the life of the original image.

“I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.” – Georgia O’Keefe

Thanks G.  You rock.
